I signed Hunter up for soccer camp with our parks department for this week. They brought in Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp and I was interested to see how things would go. Hunter was really excited to do soccer and he told me that when he gets a little bigger and he's learned soccer he's going to play football. I told Sean when he called last night and he was so excited. I was just secretly hoping that Hunter would have a good first experience with soccer. Sean and I have heard different stories from parents where their kids first experience with a sport was not positive.
Our time for the 3-4 year old was from 9am-10am which was perfect but when we got there they told us that they had us and 1 other child signed up between the ages of 3-6. Since there was so little in that age group they were going to join the little kids with the big kids time between 1pm-3pm. We came home and had a snack and I laid the boys down for a little nap. We got up and had lunch and then went back to the park.
We met the coach who's name is Gary and he's a young guy, he told us that even though the 2 young boys were playing with the older kids he wanted it to be a positive experience, this of course was wonderful to hear coming from the coach. He told me and the other mom that if the boys got frustrated or burned out to let them stop and try again another day but only if they wanted. His British accent was really strong but the kids seemed to understand him and he was really patient with Hunter and the other little boy. I appreciated the fact that he spoke to them as he did the other kids and he kept calling them "gentleman". Hunter did really well listening to him and he really encouraged the kids to keep at the drills. They took water breaks and Hunter was having a great time, he was really excited to learn that he got to keep his soccer shirt and ball. After an hour of playing Hunter was exhausted and we headed home. I am looking forward to the next few days of this camp and am thrilled that Hunter enjoyed today.
I hope that when Sean gets home later this week he might get a chance to see Hunter play. Hunter would be very excited and proud to show his dad what he is learning.
